The broadcast window was only about the final 70 kilometers of racing, so the viewer did not have the opportunity to see much. However, most of the relevant action occurred right after the cameras went live.
Remco attacked on the Erlaitz climb, but it did not seem like he wanted to go solo for the whole rest of the race. A few riders were able to claw their way back to his wheel, but in hindsight, they never really had a chance. He methodically ground the group down on the climbs until only Pello Bilbao would arrive with him in the sprint. Bilbao is a handy sprinter, but Remco is on another level this year. He won his third San Sebastian pretty easily. Vlasov soloed to a solid third place.
Apologies for the brevity of this piece, but I am battling the post-Tour hangover, and with other races on the horizon (and happening now-shoutout to the Tour of Poland, I’ll write a quick recap after that finishes), have other things on my mind. The World Championship Road Race is this Sunday, and I’ll be cooking up a big preview for that one.
